The Screamin' Eagles finished the 2007 season short of their goal of winning the program’s 13th state title as they fell to Damascus in the Maryland 3A West Regional final. Despite this loss the Eagle’s were still able to accomplish many great things en route a 9-3 final record. The season can be remembered for many different things, from the win over Urbana to the new wide-open offense Coach Kim implemented. But what should stand out most of all is the emergence of many unknown players on both sides of the ball. Unlike last year’s team, this team didn’t have the division 1A players on both sides of the ball. There was no hype about the team or the players coming into the season. They were a bunch of unknowns and how the Eagle’s would finish was an even bigger unknown. For the first time in many years, the Eagle’s were flying well below the county radar.
Despite this lack of stars, the team was very successful as it was led by the emergence of senior running back Jamaal Martin who rushed for over 1500 yards and junior quarterback George Lerch who went from handing off the ball in 2006 to throwing for almost 20 touchdowns. Defensively the team thrived under the leadership of senior linebacker Dominique Chase standout as he amassed over 100 tackles and contributed 2 defensive touchdowns. The defense also saw the emergence of players such as cornerback Joe Rankin who intercepted 7 passes, returning 3 of them for touchdowns, and junior free safety Xavier Hughes. With this group of big hearted warriors, the Eagle’s stepped up and showed that they were a threat to win ever time they stepped onto the field.
Congratulations to the 2007 Screamin’ Eagles for a hard fought season! To all of the seniors, we wish you the very best as you leave Seneca for college or a place in the workforce. Just remember that you will always have a place here at Seneca. As for the underclassmen, work hard and turn this year’s shortcoming around and bring home number 13 in 2008!
