Eleven years ago Seneca Valley ruled Germantown without opposition. The team was coming off of state title number 10, Coach Changuris was at the helm, and Chris Kelley was just a junior. Then things changed. Northwest High School opened up splitting Germantown in half. Once diehard Screamin' Eagle's fans were now forced to shed their green and gold in exchange for black and silver and a jaguar mascot. It was a sad day but the result was a new rivalry, one that would instantly be elevated to one of the top rivalries in the state of Maryland. The first year started with a blowout as Seneca ran away with a 42-14 victory at home. The next year is when things got interesting when Northwest pulled off a victory at their home field tying up the series at one a piece. After that the series has gone back and forth with great games such as the 36-35 victory in 2004 when the Eagles upset the eventual state champion Jaguars. Every year is a battle between these two teams as the battle to be called the "Kings of Germantown" and to take home the "Kings Trophy".This year will feature two 1-0 teams, both coming off of wins versus very good teams.
With this being the 10th anniversary of the rivalry, Seneca Valley will unveil a new Kings Trophy. This trophy was designed by Coach Kim and Crown Trophy and is a trophy worthy of this great rivalry. So root on Eagle's this Friday night as they attempt to keep the new trophy at home and go up 6-4 in the series.
