2010 Season (8-3-0)
Fred begins his 19th year coaching football, 14th at Seneca Valley. He will coordinate the defense this year while also coaching the defensive ends and overseeing all aspects of the football program.
Fred began his coaching career with the Screamin’ Eagles in the fall of 1994. An alumnus from Seneca Valley High School, he graduated in 1988. He played strong safety and running back for then Head Coach Al Thomas and assistant Terry Changuris, on the 13-0 1987 Maryland 4A State Championship team. Fred continued his playing career at Dickinson College from 1988-1991, where he also played strong safety as a starter during his Senior year on four Centennial Conference Championship teams for Head Coach Ed Sweeny.
Upon his graduation from Dickinson College with a Bachelor of Arts in Policy and Management Studies and Economics, Fred began working in corporate America for Chevy Chase FSB. After only a few short months, he realized that his heart was still in football and decided to pursue a teaching and coaching career. After some deliberation with former Seneca Valley Head Coach Terry Changuris, Fred decided to attend The George Washington University and earn his Master’s in Math Education. During that time, Fred began coaching football for the first time, in charge of the running backs and defensive backs for Fairfax County’s Langley High School Freshman Football Team, who finished 8–1.
Off to a good start and certified to teach mathematics, Fred returned home to Seneca Valley High School and worked as an assistant for Terry Changuris. Fred started out coaching the Junior Varsity program compiling an impressive 26–1 record as head JV football coach. During his coaching tenure at Seneca Valley he has been a part of two State Championship teams in 1994 and 1997. From there Fred left Seneca briefly and coached two seasons 1998 and 1999 at Poolesville High School as their Offensive Coordinator for current Pinecrest High School (North Carolina) Head Football Coach Chris Metzger. There he led an offense that finished 3rd ‘98 and 9th ‘99 in the County in scoring. Fred returned to Seneca’s Coaching Staff for two more years in 2000 as the Head J.V. Football Coach finishing undefeated with an 8 - 0 record. And in 2001 as the Varsity Defensive Line Coach that finished 11-1 losing in the State Semi-Finals to eventual State Champion Urbana in an epic triple overtime loss, touted as the greatest high school football game in Maryland history. In 2002 Fred left Seneca Valley once more to obtain his first Varsity Head Coaching job at Quince Orchard High School. In his two years there, Fred revived a dormant Quince Orchard football program in the midst of 7 straight losing seasons and led the Cougars to their first winning season in seven years, as well as back to back winning seasons. He compiled an 11-8 record there.
Then with Terry Changuris’ sudden retirement after the 2003 football season, Fred was given an opportunity to return back to his alma mater as head football coach. While it was a difficult decision to leave Quince Orchard after having revitalized the program, it was simply apparent to him to return back to the Valley, where he began playing and coaching football. Thus, continuing the historical link in replacement of legendary coach Terry Changuris.
Fred will teach Math and Physical Education this year at Seneca. He resides in Urbana with his three children JP (14), Mia (12), and Lily (11).
